President
Hoken S. Seki, the founder and president of Sussex Enterprises, is a graduate of Columbia College in New York and Harvard Law School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is a graduate of the United States Coast Guard Academy Reserve Officers Program, New London, Connecticut and served as a commissioned officer. He comes from an international legal background spanning over three decades in which he was a senior partner in his own and at several of the largest and most prestigious law firms, posted throughout the United States and abroad, including Baker & McKenzie, Bell, Boyd & Lloyd and Foley & Lardner. He also founded and chaired Seki, Jarvis & Lynch which merged with Bell, Boyd & Lloyd. Mr. Seki is licensed to practice law in New York, Illinois and California and is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Court of International Trade, and several federal district and appellate courts. He continues to participate in supporting business and academic institutions, including the Illinois Institute of Technology and Chicago-Kent Law School, the Divinity School of the University of Chicago, Chicago World Trade Center and the Asia Society and Global Chicago associations with the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations.
His global legal practice led him to the conclusion that an effective international business lawyer did not limit himself to simply opine on legal issues, but is required to advise and counsel on strategic issues. Through his participation as senior counsel to a number of the largest multinationals and in some of the most significant global alliances, as well as international dispute resolution matters, including landmark litigated cases in antitrust, products liability, international trade and intellectual property rights, he realized that there was a need for structuring convergence among the many professional disciplines, not limited to law, which affect all international business. With the advent of the new millennium, he formed Sussex enterprises with the support of long-standing global clients and fellow professional from the fields of accounting, marketing, finance, mergers and acquisitions, law, technology, risk management, public relations and competitive intelligence.
